Cooperation helps with taking all viewpoints into consideration
It is important that mailboxes and the use of mailboxes do not cause unnecessary risks to the people moving in the environment. Furthermore, mailboxes should not interfere with snow plowing or other maintenance in streets or roads. This is why the municipality’s knowhow is of the utmost importance in terms of planning the locations of mailboxes. We also cooperate with the Ely Centres in charge of road maintenance.
Usually, the mailboxes of one-family houses are grouped, i.e. several mailboxes are placed in a row on the curbside. Grouping reduces the number of delivery stops and concentrates them along the delivery route. This makes the deliverer’s job easier and improves traffic safety as well as occupational safety.
Old residential areas are moving to mailbox grouping one area at a time. We will contact the municipality before we begin the grouping in a specific area. In most parts of the country, mailboxes have already been grouped. However, occasionally the grouping will have to be performed again.
If necessary, see the mailbox placement instructions for residents: Placement and installation of the mailbox
Proactive planning in new residential areas
When it comes to the zoning of new residential areas, we are happy to cooperate with the municipality already at the planning stage. Planning mailbox locations in advance makes the environment uniform and functional. What’s more, the municipality won’t have to resolve as many disagreements afterwards as the placement of mailboxes is already known at the construction stage.
If you work for a municipality and the issue is topical, please don’t hesitate to submit a contact request to Posti Customer Service.
Municipal construction supervision can also direct a constructor to contact Posti in advance with regard to the location of the mailbox. This way, the constructor will not end up placing the mailbox in a place that will not work in the long run.
If there are disagreements regarding the location of a mailbox
Mailbox placement is Posti’s task, and the municipality is obliged to allow mailboxes to be placed in the public area, i.e. the municipality’s land.
If a resident is unsatisfied with the location of a mailbox, they may refer the matter to the municipal construction supervision. In all cases, the matter is decided by the construction supervision authority comprising several members, not an individual official. Any disputes are resolved in accordance with the provisions of the Postal Act. An appeal against a decision may be lodged in an administrative court.
