Mail delivery is a commercial activity
Posti does not have an exclusive right to deliver mail in Finland. Instead, mail delivery is a commercial and a competitive activity. There are approximately 15 other mail delivery companies in Finland. You can find information on them in the the Finnish Transport and Communications Agency Traficom’s register of postal operators .
Companies and the authorities sign a contract for the delivery of items with a delivery company. In other words, when you receive an invoice from a company or a letter from a public authority, it may be delivered either by Posti or by some other delivery company.
Posti is the only company delivering mail everywhere in Finland. It is important that mail is delivered everywhere in Finland, despite the long distances.
Who should feedback be sent to?
We don’t always manage to deliver mail correctly. That said, if a letter or a publication doesn’t reach its intended recipient, there may be other factors at play than a mistake made by Posti.
It’s not common knowledge in Finland, but mail is also delivered by parties other than Posti. Mistakes happen, even for Posti’s own deliverers, but our deliverers and customer advisors also receive feedback on other companies’ deliveries on a daily basis. In this case, the feedback doesn’t reach the correct party.
For example, if you haven’t received an invoice that you were expecting, first ask the sender for the delivery company they use.
How to identify a letter delivered by Posti
All stamped letters are delivered by Posti. Posti also delivers all letters sent by companies and marked with Posti, Priority or Economy. Any letters marked with another delivery ID have been delivered by another delivery company.
If Posti delivers mail incorrectly to you, cross out the address and write “incorrectly delivered” on the envelope. Return the letter to Posti’s orange mailbox.
If the letter was delivered by another delivery company, check the return instructions on the delivery company’s own website.
